SENIOR BIOPROCESS UPSTREAM DEVELOPMENT SCIENTIST

Location: Dublin
Department: Technical Operations
Reports to: Biologics Functional Lead

ABOUT THE ROLE

We are seeking a Senior Bioprocess Upstream Development Scientist to support the development, optimisation, characterisation, scale-up and technology transfer of upstream biopharmaceutical processes.

The role involves hands-on laboratory work with small- and pilot-scale bioreactors, including AMBR systems. The primary focus is mammalian cell culture, although experience in microbial fermentation, viral vectors, vaccines, or cell and gene therapies is also relevant.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Plan and execute upstream process-development studies.
  • Develop and optimise mammalian, adherent or microbial cell-culture processes.
  • Operate laboratory and pilot-scale bioreactors.
  • Develop scale-up strategies and representative scale-down models.
  • Design experiments covering media, feeds and process parameters.
  • Apply DOE, QbD and statistical approaches where appropriate.
  • Analyse data and troubleshoot process or equipment issues.
  • Support technology transfer into pilot or manufacturing environments.
  • Prepare technical reports and present findings to stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with internal teams, clients and external partners.
  • Mentor less experienced scientists where required.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Degree, MSc or PhD in biotechnology, biochemical engineering, bioprocessing or a related discipline.
  • Relevant upstream biopharmaceutical process-development experience.
  • Hands-on experience with laboratory or pilot-scale bioreactors.
  • Experience in mammalian, adherent or microbial cell culture.
  • Strong experimental design, data analysis, technical writing and presentation skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary and client-facing environment.

DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE

  • AMBR 250, AMBR 15 or similar automated bioreactor systems.
  • CHO, HEK or comparable production cell lines.
  • Fed-batch or perfusion process development.
  • Process scale-up, scale-down and technology transfer.
  • DOE, QbD, JMP or related statistical tools.
  • Biologics, viral-vector, vaccine or cell and gene therapy development.
