SENIOR BIOPROCESS UPSTREAM DEVELOPMENT SCIENTIST

ABOUT THE ROLE
We are seeking a Senior Bioprocess Upstream Development Scientist to support the development, optimisation, characterisation, scale-up and technology transfer of upstream biopharmaceutical processes.
The role involves hands-on laboratory work with small- and pilot-scale bioreactors, including AMBR systems. The primary focus is mammalian cell culture, although experience in microbial fermentation, viral vectors, vaccines, or cell and gene therapies is also relevant.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Plan and execute upstream process-development studies.
- Develop and optimise mammalian, adherent or microbial cell-culture processes.
- Operate laboratory and pilot-scale bioreactors.
- Develop scale-up strategies and representative scale-down models.
- Design experiments covering media, feeds and process parameters.
- Apply DOE, QbD and statistical approaches where appropriate.
- Analyse data and troubleshoot process or equipment issues.
- Support technology transfer into pilot or manufacturing environments.
- Prepare technical reports and present findings to stakeholders.
- Collaborate with internal teams, clients and external partners.
- Mentor less experienced scientists where required.
REQUIREMENTS
- Degree, MSc or PhD in biotechnology, biochemical engineering, bioprocessing or a related discipline.
- Relevant upstream biopharmaceutical process-development experience.
- Hands-on experience with laboratory or pilot-scale bioreactors.
- Experience in mammalian, adherent or microbial cell culture.
- Strong experimental design, data analysis, technical writing and presentation skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary and client-facing environment.
DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE
- AMBR 250, AMBR 15 or similar automated bioreactor systems.
- CHO, HEK or comparable production cell lines.
- Fed-batch or perfusion process development.
- Process scale-up, scale-down and technology transfer.
- DOE, QbD, JMP or related statistical tools.
- Biologics, viral-vector, vaccine or cell and gene therapy development.
