Location: San Francisco Bay Area (on-site) | Type: Full-time, permanent
Few biotechs can say every product they make is one of a kind. Our client designs an individual cancer vaccine for each patient, working from that patient's own samples and alongside their oncologist. Samples arrive and vaccines get designed in one Bay Area lab, so a well-run lab directly affects how quickly a patient gets treated.
They need an experienced Lab Manager to own the operational side of that lab. You'll keep everything stocked, serviced, compliant and safe so the scientific team can focus on their work. This suits someone organised and self-starting who likes being the person a lab depends on.
Responsibilities
- Run purchasing end to end: raise orders for reagents and consumables, manage supplier accounts, and make sure invoices are paid on time
- Keep lab stock under control, spot shortages before they happen, and keep supplies flowing
- Arrange servicing, maintenance and repairs for lab equipment so instruments stay reliable
- Own lab safety and biosafety practice, including the correct handling and storage of human samples
- Take on the lab's admin, forms and documentation without needing reminders
- Bring in simple, practical inventory and ordering systems the whole team will use
- Act as the scientists' operational partner, sorting out logistics so they can stay on the science
You'll bring
- At least 2 years as a Lab Manager, Lab Coordinator or Lab Operations Lead in a life sciences setting
- Working knowledge of biosafety requirements and regulations for storing human samples
- A highly organised, forward-looking approach: you see problems coming
- A self-starting, friendly, low-ego style, and you finish things without being chased
- Location in the San Francisco Bay Area, or willingness to relocate
- The right to work in the US, or a realistic route to it
Particularly welcome:
- Experience keeping a small or startup lab running
- Hands-on purchasing and vendor management: purchase orders, supplier accounts, budgets and invoicing
- Having set up a new lab or managed a lab move
- A track record of building inventory or ordering systems others actually use
- Experience with clinical samples, such as chain of custody, freezer and biobank management, and CLIA requirements
- Bench experience of your own, so you understand what scientists need day to day
